Training layers
Layering for training: every layer has a job
The idea behind layering is that three thin layers are better than one thick top. The base layer needs to dry quickly so sweat does not chill you. The mid layer should hold in warmth, and the outer layer should block the wind and light showers. Because each layer can be taken off separately, you can adapt as you warm up or the weather changes. When you build up your training tops this way, the same kit can handle both a mild spring day and a blustery January evening.
| Layer | Job | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Moves sweat away, dries fast | Polyester T-shirt |
| Mid | Keeps you warm | Quarter-zip |
| Outer | Blocks wind and light showers | Light training jacket |
Base layer: a T-shirt that dries quickly
The base layer sits directly against your skin, which makes it the most important training top. Avoid cotton here, because it holds on to moisture and turns cold when you stop. A polyester sports top is light and dries quickly. The fit should be close enough that the fabric does not bunch up under the mid layer, but not so tight that it restricts your movement.
That is exactly the role our T-shirts are made for. They are worn on their own in the sports hall and in summer, and as a base layer for the rest of the year.

Mid and outer layers: quarter-zip and light jacket
As a mid layer, a quarter-zip is one of the most versatile choices. The zip at the neck works like a thermostat: open when your heart rate rises, closed when you are standing still. It should be roomy enough to slide over a T-shirt without sticking, but not so big that it bunches around the waist.
The outer layer for training is rarely a heavy winter coat. Choose a light training jacket that shields you from the wind and packs down small, so you can tie it around your waist or put it in your bag once you are warm.
Three combinations you can use
Indoors in the sports hall: just a T-shirt, perhaps with a top for warm-ups and breaks. Running or football on a cool autumn day: a T-shirt and a quarter-zip that you unzip as you go. Windy, cold days: all three layers from the start, with the jacket coming off once you get going. Women's tops and men's tops follow the same principle; the difference lies in the cut, not the layers.
Design with artificial intelligence
At Zilenzo, AI is our tool for creating patterns and colours. We describe the sport and the mood we want to capture, let artificial intelligence generate lots of ideas and shape the best ones ourselves so they suit the cut. That applies to our T-shirts today and to the training tops that are coming later.
Frequently asked questions
What should you wear for training when it is cold?
When it is cold, dress in layers: a quick-drying T-shirt as the base layer, a quarter-zip as the mid layer and a light windproof jacket on the outside. Take the layers off as you warm up. That way you avoid both getting cold and getting soaked in sweat.
Which top is best as a base layer?
A light polyester T-shirt is the best base layer, because it dries quickly and sits close without feeling tight. Cotton is not recommended as a base layer, as it holds on to moisture. Zilenzo's T-shirts are made for exactly that role.
Should training tops fit tightly?
The base layer should fit fairly close, while the mid and outer layers need enough room to sit over it without squeezing. In other words, each new layer should be a little roomier than the one underneath. Use the size guide on each product.
Does Zilenzo sell quarter-zips and jackets?
Not yet. Our quarter-zip training top and light training jacket are on the way, but we do not have a date. Join Zilenzo Club to be notified, and start with the base layer in the meantime.
How long does delivery take, and can I return items to Zilenzo?
Zilenzo ships from Denmark, and the delivery time and shipping cost for your country are shown at checkout. You can withdraw from your purchase within 14 days. You pay the return shipping yourself.
