Football socks
Football socks or sports socks: what's the difference?
A knee-high sports sock covers the whole calf and usually ends a couple of finger widths below the knee. A regular sports sock ends at the ankle or halfway up the shin. The long style is used especially where shin pads need to be held in place, and where you want fabric between your skin and a hard surface, for example when tackling on artificial grass.
In football, the official rules say shin pads must be covered by the socks. Many clubs also have a set colour for their match socks. Check the rules for your competition and ask your club before you buy.
Material: cotton or a synthetic blend
Cotton is soft, but it holds moisture and gets heavy when you sweat for 90 minutes. Most knee-high sports socks are therefore made from a blend of synthetic fibres such as polyester or polyamide with a little elastane, which keeps the sock in place and helps it hold its shape. Some styles have a thicker sole or terry loops under the foot for extra comfort in your boots.
Wash the socks at a low temperature and let them air dry. Fabric softener can make synthetic fibres worse at wicking moisture away, so skip it.
Fit and size
Sports socks are usually sold by shoe size. The heel should sit where your heel is, so the fabric does not fold in your boot and cause blisters. The top band should hold the sock up without digging into your calf. If you have long legs or large shin pads, check that the sock is long enough to cover them completely.
If you are between two sizes, choose the one that fits your foot rather than your calf. A sock that is too big under the foot slides around, and you notice that sooner than a slightly snug top band.
Compression socks: choose for comfort
Compression socks fit closer to the leg than ordinary socks. Many people like the feel, and they rarely slip down during a match. We make no promises about recovery or circulation. Choose them because they fit well, and talk to a doctor or physiotherapist if you are considering them for health reasons.
