Running tights and training tights

Full-length, 3/4 or short tights?

Full-length running tights are the standard choice from autumn to spring, keeping your muscles warm and the wind out. 3/4 tights end below the knee and suit mild days and indoor training, when you want a little air around your ankles. Short tights fit like cycling shorts and are worn on their own in summer or under a pair of loose shorts to stop your thighs chafing. Many runners own one pair of each and switch depending on the weather.

Fabric, compression and see-through tights

Good sports tights are made from a stretchy synthetic fabric, typically a blend of polyester or polyamide and elastane. The fabric should wick sweat away and spring back into shape after washing. Compression tights fit extra tight, and some people find their legs feel fresher. The research on the effect is mixed, so choose them because you like the feel, not because they promise a particular performance.

Do the squat test before you decide: squat down low in front of a mirror in good light. If you can see skin or underwear through the fabric, it is too thin for training.

Waistband, seams and size

The waistband decides whether your tights stay up. A wide, high waistband with an internal drawcord slips down less while you run and feels better when you bend forward. Flat seams and a gusset in the crotch reduce chafing on long runs. A pocket at the back of the waistband or on the side of the thigh can hold a phone without it bouncing.

Women's tights usually have a high waist and more room over the hips, while men's tights often sit slightly lower at the waist and are frequently worn under shorts. They should fit snugly without digging in at the waist or knee. If you are between two sizes, choose the smaller one for firm support and the larger one for more freedom of movement, and always check the size guide.

Tights for cold and dark months

In the depths of winter, thermal tights with a brushed inner face are a good choice when the temperature drops towards freezing. Combine them with a lightweight training jacket and a quick-drying base layer on your upper body. Dark mornings call for reflective details, and reflective details on the calf are especially visible because they move with every stride. In summer, thin short tights are more comfortable than full-length ones.
