Arm sleeves
What are arm sleeves used for?
A basketball arm sleeve is usually worn on the shooting arm and runs from the upper arm down to the wrist. Many players wear one because they like the way the arm feels supported and warm, and because it is part of their look on court. In volleyball and handball, some players wear arm sleeves to have fabric between their skin and the floor when they dive for the ball.
For running, they are often called arm warmers. You put them on at the start of a cold run and roll them down to your wrists or take them off once you have warmed up. They are an easy alternative to running in long sleeves.
How an arm sleeve should fit
An arm sleeve should be snug enough to stay up when you stretch your arm above your head, but it must not squeeze or leave marks. Measure the circumference of your upper arm at its widest point and of your forearm just below the elbow, and compare them with the size guide of the retailer you buy from. The length should be right, so the sleeve does not bunch at the crook of your elbow.
If you are between two sizes, try the smaller one first if it needs to stay up during jumps and shots, and the larger one if you will mainly use it as an arm warmer.
Compression sleeves or ordinary sleeves?
Compression sleeves are knitted more tightly than ordinary arm sleeves. Some people like the feeling of a sleeve that stays firmly in place, while others find it too much. We make no promises about recovery or performance, so choose the fit you find most comfortable. If you wear sleeves for medical reasons, ask a professional.
Material, rules and care
Arm sleeves are usually made from synthetic blends with elastane, so they stretch with your arm and dry quickly. Check the rules of your league or competition before you play a match in a sleeve, as some have requirements for the colour of what players wear. Wash the sleeves at a low temperature without fabric softener, and let them air dry.
